Saab, the Swedish defence and security company, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defence have signed a contract regarding in-service support for the GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) solution.

The order value is approximately $190 million with a three-year contract period that runs until 2026. It includes maintenance and logistics support, as well as training services.

GlobalEye is an advanced multi-domain AEW&C solution with an array of active and passive sensors that provide long-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea and over land.

By providing real-time information to units in air forces, armies and navies, GlobalEye enables enhanced situational awareness of the surrounding areas and early detection of threats.

UAE is the launch customer for GlobalEye, being the first to order the system as the Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) in November 2015.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area surveillance, said: “This agreement solidifies Saab’s role in ensuring that GlobalEye remains mission-ready. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence and providing long-term local support.”

The complete sensor suite of the GlobalEye AEW&C lets users detect and identify threats in all three domains. Alongside the Erieye ER (Extended Range) radar, the suite also consists of maritime surveillance radar, electrooptical sensor, ESM/ELINT, AIS, and IFF/ADS-B.

Its swing-role capabilities make GlobalEye a surveillance solution that ensures quick and accurate coverage of vast distances of air, sea or land, with the ability to switch between surveillance areas in an instant. It can carry out multiple missions simultaneously. The Global 6000/6500 aircraft from Bombardier adds over 11 hours of operational endurance.

The Bombardier has a full self-protection suite. GlobalEye can detect small boats like jet skis at long distances and the combination of Erieye ER and maritime surveillance radar allows for detection of objects as small as a periscope. Its radar images are weather-independent.

Saab has a long association with the UAE, and in 2018, it created Saab Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary in Abu Dhabi. The facility in Tawazun Industrial Park (TIP) in the capital serves as a centre for development and production of a variety of defence and security products.

Together with Gulf Air Space Co LLC (GACO) Saab also has a joint venture in the country; Saab Middle East LLC, where GACO owns 51 per cent and Saab the remaining 49 percent.
