The International Astronomy Centre announced Eid Al Fitr 2023, according to the Australian Fatwa Council. Friday, 21 April will be the last day of the month of Ramadan for the Australian Muslim community.
The statement released confirmed that after inquiries to the local and global observatories in Sydney, Eid Al Fitr 2023 will be on Saturday, April 22 and mark the first day of Shawwal.
The Grand Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council determined the end of Ramadan based on the calculated sighting of the moon. “This is a method that many prominent and reputable global scholars councils have adopted,” the statement read.
“The Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council acknowledge, understand and respect the Imams and scholars who may hold a different opinion,” the statement explained.
In various countries in the Middle East, the moon-sighting committee has called on Muslims to look for the crescent on Thursday to determine the last day of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid Al Fitr 2023.
In the UAE, the committee requested anyone who sees the crescent to contact the number 02 692 1166 to be directed to the nearest court to record the testimony.
In Qatar, the Crescent Sighting Committee at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) has called on all Muslims living in the country Qatar to sight the crescent of Shawwal on Thursday, Ramadan 29, 1444 AH, corresponding to April 20, 2023.
Meanwhile, in Oman, the main moon-sighting committee for the month of Shawwal 1444 AH will meet at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs on Thursday, April 20.
Bahrain’s moon-sighting panel will convene on Thursday evening to receive news and testimonies about the birth of new Shawwal crescent for the year 1444 AH, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (SCIA) announced.
