Iraq stadium stampede: Football fan killed, dozens left injured

The stampede occurred as thousands of fans headed to the Basra International Stadium

At least one football fan have been killed in a stamped outside a football stadium in Iraq, the BBC reported Thursday, citing local reports.

Along with the death, at least another 60 have been injured.

Thousands of fans had been heading towards the Basra International Stadium to watch the final of the Arabian Gulf Cup between Iraq and Oman.

Iraqi National Agency (INA) reported that some of those injured in the crush were now in a critical medical condition, the BBC said.

Videos of the stampede show people crushed against each other along a road outside the stadium, with some lying motionless on the ground.

The Arabian Gulf Cup is a biennial football competition between eight countries in the Arab world. This year’s edition is the 25th version and is the first time the tournament has been held in Iraq since 1979.

The country had last appeared in the final of the tournament in 2013, and last won the trophy in 1988.
