A Kenyan security guard has reportedly been convicted for killing an American teacher in Qatar.
Judges on Tuesday ordered Alvine Moseti Anyona to serve a life sentence in Qatar – between 15 and 20 years – and be deported after that, said Doha News.
Jennifer Brown, 40, worked at the English Modern School in Al Wakrah. She was killed in November 2012, two months after moving to Qatar.
Her body was found in her Al Sadd apartment, where she and several colleagues lived. The defendant, a security guard in the building, was arrested days after her death; he allegedly confessed to the crime and directed investigators to the murder weapon.
According to Doha News, Anyona’s lawyer argued in court that Brown had picked a fight with the defendant and, in the heat of the moment, the man had snapped and hit her head against the door.
But the lawyer’s version of events differed from previous testimony from a forensic examiner, who said that Brown had been sexually assaulted and died from multiple stab wounds.
The defendant reportedly plans to appeal the verdict.
