Saudi Arabia saw 88m passengers travel through its airports last year, according to data released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).

The number was revealed as part of Saudi Arabia’s comprehensive summary into the aviation in 2022 as part of the Air Transport Statistics Publication.

The figure represents an increase of 82 per cent compared to the year before.

Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport saw the most passengers, with around 32m recorded over the 12-month period.

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh saw approximately 27m passengers and Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport witnessed around 10m travellers.

The average number of daily flights arriving and departing at international airports for international and domestic flights in 2022 was 131.29, while the average daily flights arriving and departing at domestic airports was 5.94.

Saudi Airlines recorded the highest market share in terms of the number of flights, with about 283,000 journeys, followed by foreign airlines with about 173,000 flights, then flynas recorded around 104,000 flights.

Airports in the Kingdom now connect to 56 other countries, an increase of ten on the previous year.

The GASTAT data shows the number of commercial flights in 2022 amounted to approximately 701,000, an increase of 41% over 2021.

The UAE was the most popular destination for departures, a change from Egypt the year before.
