Engineering firm Norman Disney and Young (NDY) will launch a Dubai office and will work on the landmark Nakheel Harbour and Tower project in Dubai, the company has said.
NDY is expected to provide mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services for the kilometre-high Tower. The Nakheel Tower will have more than 200 floors and 150 lifts using a sustainable design.
The Nakheel Tower is NDY’s biggest project and the company will provide services to an approximate 30% to 40% of the overall project value.
NDY has opened an office in Dubai with a staff of 10. By the end of the year manpower is expected to double.
The scale of the project will create a range of new challenges that NDY will have to mitigate, including temperature in which the tower experiences five different climactic conditions and, as a result, there are design considerations at each level.
NDY also is faced with water systems that will require pumping in stages because pressure requirement exceeds the pressure rating of equipment and pipework. The electrical systems are also another challenge in which the project has the power requirements equivalent to those of a small city, necessitating substations throughout the tower.
