Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs will close Jeddah’s Al-Nakheel rubbish dump and turn the area into an amusement parkat a cost of SR29.3m ($7.8m).
An agreement has been signed by the municipality and Ali Al-Aswad Group to transform the dump, which has been in use for the past 25 years, reported the Saudi Gazette.
The huge project, which will see the dump cleared and the ground prepared with a top cover of soil, will be completed in stages, with all work due to be complete by November 2011, the paper said.
The dump receives between 3,500-4,000 tonnes of waste per day. An environmental survey on the effects of closing the dump will be carried out by the Al-Rai Environmental Services Company.
