Abu Dhabi is set be the first emirate to add the quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine to its vaccination schedule, a senior government official has said.
Dr Oliver Harrison, head of public health at the General Authority for Health Services (GAHS) told Medical Times that authorisation is “in the near future” but that vaccination was unlikely to be mandatory for preteen girls.
“Essentially we as an authority want to offer it,” he said. “Clearly HPV is a sexually transmitted disease and it is important we deal with [this] in a culturally sensitive way. What we want to do is drive uptake as quickly as possible.”
