EMC and Microsoft are sharing key network management technologies in a licensing and collaboration deal on EMC’s Smarts product line, the firms said last week.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will license EMC’s Smarts network discovery and health monitoring technology, to be used in its System Center Operations Manager 2007.
Smarts is a modelling-based network management technology, which EMC acquired two years ago, and is widely used in the telco industry. It can be used to diagnose network problems, allowing administrators to work out just what part of a network system is actually failing.
Initially, the two firms will offer a two-way connector product, which will be generally available next month.
“By integrating EMC’s market-leading network management technology into Operations Manager and collaborating with EMC to develop a new cross-domain behavioural model that will enhance our management pack schema, we are able to give customers a true network-aware service management solution and improve operations management across disparate devices and systems,” said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business.
The firms have also agreed to develop a cross-domain behavioural model, embedding the Smarts technology into the next version of Operations Manager, which is expected in late 2008.
