A study by Russian researchers suggested that millions of dollars can be made in revenue with a new advertising platform that is quite literally, out of this world. The paper was published on satellite formation flying for space advertising, stating that it is technically feasible and economically viable.

A formation of satellites will have to be launched “into orbit to reflect sunlight and display commercials in the sky above cities,” stated Skoltech.

“Monetisation of an image demonstration over a city depends on the city population, outdoor advertising cost, and parameters limiting the number of potential advertising observations,” the paper detailed.

An advertisement would appear as a constellation of bright ‘artificial stars’ formed into an image that can be observed in the clear night sky for several minutes.

“We’ve been studying some of the more technical aspects of space advertising for a while now,” said the study’s first author Shamil Biktimirov, a research intern at Skoltech’s Engineering Center.

Concerns have emerged about the pollution that this new method of advertising would contribute to.

“Earth coverage demonstrated that the best strategy for economic feasibility of the system is to perform demonstrations at megalopolises with big population and high CPM. The cities typically have permanent light pollution and are not considered as locations for observatories for which the image demonstration can be harmful,” the research paper said in regards to pollution concerns.
