Careem will no longer have operations in Qatar, starting Tuesday.
The announcement was made by the Dubai-based super app via a message sent to customers in Qatar on Monday.
According to a report by Reuters, the surprise announcement comes two months after the World Cup in Qatar, when Careem-branded vehicles were part of the tournament’s official plans to transport visiting fans, alongside cars from Uber and local taxi provider Karwa.
“Unfortunately, Careem’s ride-hailing operations will no longer operate in Qatar as of February 28, 2023,” the message said.
The company also informed its Qatar customers holding credit that it would issue a refund by March 15.
As per the report, the transportation network company’s message did not reveal an explanation for why it stopped operations.
“Careem will no longer provide ride hailing services in the country as of 28 February 2023. Careem is proud to have served customers and Captains in Qatar and to have contributed to the growth of the Qatari economy,” a spokesperson told Arabian Business on Tuesday.
The Dubai-based app was brought by Uber Technologies Inc in 2019 for $3.1 billion. In Qatar, Careem only offered customers ride-hailing services, unlike the UAE.
In the UAE, customers can also avail the super-app’s food delivery services, digital payment services, courier services, house cleaning services and more.
