Qatar Airways removes ‘unnecessary’ first-class seats from aircrafts

This strategic decision, announced by CEO Akbar Al Baker, shows a departure from the Qatar Airways’ luxury offerings

Qatar Airways, the national carrier of Qatar, has removed its first-class seats from its future long-haul aircraft.

This strategic decision, announced by CEO Akbar Al Baker, shows a departure from the airline’s luxury offerings.

Al Baker justified the move by stating that the current business-class experience already provides passengers with a wide range of amenities and perks, making the addition of luxurious first-class seats “unnecessary.”

“Why should you invest in a subclass of an aeroplane that already gives you all the amenities that first class gives you,” said Al Baker, speaking in an exclusive hour-long interview in Istanbul on Saturday. “I don’t see the necessity.”

While other airlines, such as Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Qantas Airways, and Air France, have been investing in features like sleep pods, double beds, and lie-flat premium economy seats to elevate the luxury travel experience, Al Baker believes that the future lies in business class, as evidenced by Qatar Airways’ successful “Q-suite” product.

The airline’s forthcoming Boeing 777X aircraft, set to replace the existing Airbus A380s that still feature eight first-class seats, will not include a first-class cabin. Once retired, the 777Xs will become the largest aircraft in Qatar Airways’ fleet.

Over time, the distinction between cabin classes has blurred, particularly with the introduction of premium economy seats bridging the gap between business and economy class.

First class has transformed into a novelty primarily utilised by corporate executives or those seeking an exclusive travel experience.

By prioritising its investment in business class and eliminating first-class seats, Qatar Airways is taking an unconventional approach to luxury travel.

The airline aims to align with the evolving preferences and demands of the market.

QVerse: An interactive VR experience by Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways has also been an industry leader in innovation, introducing QVerse environments that provide passengers with an immersive digital experience to navigate their travel arrangements prior to arriving at the airport.

Passengers can now explore the new Business Class Suite and Economy Class offerings in the Boeing 787-9, as well as the Q-suite and Economy Class in the Airbus A350-1000, through an augmented online experience.

They can also discover the luxury of the Al Safwa First Class Lounge and the tranquility of the Al Mourjan Business Class Lounge at Hamad International Airport.

Al Baker, stressed on the impact of technological advances on enhancing digital offerings for customers.

With the introduction of QVerse, passengers can virtually experience the airline’s award-winning services and enjoy discounts when booking Premium or Economy Class tickets.

QVerse users can explore Qatar Airways’ immersive experience, discover competitive fares for the next six months, and gain insights into onboard cabins and dining menus.

The platform is available in over ten languages, catering to international travelers who wish to engage with the products and services of the esteemed airline.

Qatar Airways initially entered the metaverse world with the launch of QVerse, a virtual reality experience, in April 2022.

This platform allows users to embark on a digital interactive journey featuring Qatar Airways’ MetaHuman cabin crew.
