Saudi Arabia’s budget airline Flynas is launching direct flights between AlUla and Cairo, the company announced.

The carrier is set to operate two weekly direct flights between the historic Saudi city in the Kingdom’s northwest region and the Egyptian capital, from October 6.

The move comes as Saudi Arabia ramps up efforts to advertise the country to international visitors – as part of its wider campaign to modernise its economy.

AlUla is known for its historical, natural, and geographical features – with archeological sites from the Dadanite, Nabatean, Roman, and old Islamic civilisations dating as far back as 7000 years.

Described as an “open air museum,” the Saudi tourist spot is home to the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra, a Nabatean site with 110 well preserved tombs carved in sandstone rocks.

Flynas earlier said it was resuming flights from AlUla to Riyadh, Dammam, and Dubai, with two weekly flights for each city. The Saudi carrier was the first-ever airline to launch international scheduled flights to the historical city pre-pandemic.
