Meydan has awarded the building contract for the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, which will host the 2010 Dubai World Cup.
The developer signed the AED4.6 billion (US $1.89 billion) contract for the construction of the grandstand building with Arabtec Construction, the firm responsible for the Burj Dubai, and WCT Engineering at a ceremony in Dubai on September 17.
“The building is due to be completed by late 2009, five months before the Dubai World Cup in 2010. We have two of the most respected contractors in the world in Arabtec and WCT and we’ll be working together as partners to deliver this on time,” said the project’s architect Teo Ah Khing of TAK Design Consultants.
Meydan chairman, Saeed H Al Tayer said that he looked forward to working with Arabtec Construction and WCT Engineering, but noted, “the contract is for the grandstand and the hotel [only]”.
“There are other facilities to come and we will make announcements about them in due course,” he added.w
The 60,000 capacity grandstand will contain a five star-plus hotel, 10 restaurants, the Meydan Museum and Gallery, covered car parking for 10,000 vehicles and the headquarters’ of Dubai Racing Club and Emirates Racing Authority.
“The grandstand will be 1.2 km long and when you [compare] this project to the rest of the world it stands out by itself. Our team traveled to Australia and the US and visited every racecourse, so the project has been well studied,” said Al Tayer.
Contracts for the racecourse hotel operator, a business park, the turf and dirt racetracks and an 18-hole golf course will be announced soon.
“This will complement all of the other fantastic projects being constructed in this part of the world, and hopefully they will complement it as well and we can move towards fulfilling the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,” concluded Al Tayer.
