“A number of measures have been taken that aims at advancing the sports and youth sector, given the special importance it has for the present and future of the state,” Ashraf Sobhy, Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports, told Arabian Business.
Since 2018, Egypt has been implementing a plan aimed at encouraging investment in the sports field, the state aims to increase the financial sustainability of sports activities and the government’s plan stipulates making a sports investment as one of the most important sources of income.
The parliament proceeded to amend Sports Law No. 71 of 2017, and replace it with a new draft law submitted by the government.
Sobhy emphasised that the government’s plan since 2008 has yielded results leading to a boom in the development of youth centres and clubs with a regulation and law organising sector.
In addition, 253 youth centre and 96 swimming pools were built while 14 sports stadiums and 13 clubs are in development.
5,503 educational and training programs were implemented that provided about 117 million youth participation opportunities.
When asked about the possibility of offering major stadiums for sports investment, such as Cairo Stadium, Sobhy said that these stadiums have independent economic bodies that manage them and follow in their decisions the vision of the political leadership.
Sobhy said, “Success is an ally of Egypt in organising local, Arab, continental, regional and international tournaments in various sports thanks to the ingredients and capabilities that Egypt has, and the great construction boom that it has witnessed recently.”
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, during a recent visit to Egypt, praised the extent of development of sports construction, which encourages the Egyptian administration to submit a file to host the 2036 Olympics.
