Sharjah International Airport will undergo a AED1.5 billion ($410 million) transformation as it looks to handle 25 million passengers annually by 2027.
Sharjah Airport Authority highlighted the expansion plans during its participation in the Arabian Travel Market Exhibition in Dubai.
It did not give details but said “many facilities” would be expanded as part of the investment plan.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, said the plan was part of the strategy to increase the tourist influx to Sharjah to 10 million tourists by 2021, in accordance with the Sharjah Tourist Vision 2021.
Sharjah International Airport recorded a 10 percent increase in passenger traffic in 2016, seeing over 11 million passengers pass through the airport last year, compared to 10 million passengers during 2015.
Aircraft movements increased by 6 percent from 71,000 during 2015 to 76,000 during 2016.
