Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract for the Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project, part of the larger Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project.
The initiative, directed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai and followed up by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, aims to enhance Dubai’s infrastructure in response to urban growth and population expansion.
The development will serve areas including Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital, and Al Wasl Club. By 2030, it is projected to cater to over 420,000 people.
Four new intersections to transform Dubai road network
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted that Oud Metha and Al Asayel Streets Development Project is one of most important infrastructure project, according to a statement by the Dubai Media Office (DMO).
The project will increase Oud Metha Street’s capacity from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour and reduce travel time from 20 minutes to 5 minutes, “marking a 50 percent increase in capacity. It will also reduce travel time on the route from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes, a massive improvement of 75 percent,” the statement said.
Four intersections will be developed:
- Oud Metha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street intersection
- Oud Metha Street with Al Asayel and Al Nawras Streets intersection
- Al Nawras Street and Al Khail Road intersection
- Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Metha Street intersection
Each intersection will see significant improvements, including new bridges, additional lanes, and capacity enhancements.
The Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project has already seen the development of Ras Al Khor Road, increasing its capacity to 10,000 vehicles per hour and reducing travel time from 20 to 7 minutes.
