Component manufacturer Sapphire has just announced its X1950 Pro Dual graphics card, which combines two AMD X1950 Pro GPUs via CrossFire mode on a single PCI-E x16 PCB (printed circuit board).
CrossFire is AMD’s multiGPU solution whereby two graphics cards or GPUs can work together in parallel to produce better graphics performance.
The graphics card is compatible with any PCI-E x16 supporting motherboard and will run in dual mode regardless of whether or not the motherboard offers CrossFire support. Sapphire claims that combining two X1950 Pro Dual cards is possible on a motherboard that offers CrossFire support – thus featuring two PCI-E x16 slots – and says that this will result in a quad CrossFire solution. At present however driver support for quad CrossFire does not exist.
Each of the Dual’s X1950 Pro GPUs will run at the AMD recommended core and memory speeds of 580MHz and 1400MHz. A total of 1Gbyte of GDDR3 will be fitted to each X1950 Pro Dual but each GPU will only be able to access a maximum of 512Mbytes of this memory.
Sapphire plans to ship its X1950 Pro Dual cards in February with pricing expected to range from $350 to $400.
