Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani has now become the world’s third richest person, making him the first Asian to land among the top three positions, according to the Bloomberg Billionnaires Index.
Despite dropping out of college, Adani began his journey as a diamond trader before turning to coal and now holds a net worth of $137.4 billion.
Adani has surpassed other notable Asian business tycoons such as Reliance’s Mukesh Ambani and Alibaba’s Jack Ma Yun, and now trails Tesla’s Elon Must and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
The 60-year-old, saw his wealth skyrocket during the pandemic, expanded his coal-to-ports conglomerate, into data centers, cement, media and alumina, among others.
Recently, Adani Group has mounted a bid in one of India’s news companies NDTV (New Delhi Television Ltd). The deal is being pursued by AMG Media Networks, a unit of Adani’s conglomerate.
Adani also pledged to donate $7.7 billion for social causes to mark his 60th birthday, in June this year.
