Blue Coat to increase regional focus

Blue Coat, the US$75 million internet security appliance vendor, has announced the availability of new high-end proxy appliances and expansion plans for the Middle East market.

The announcements were made at a press conference held in Dubai as part of Blue Coat Middle East’s first regional value added reseller conference.

“The Middle East region has been a great contributor to our success and the revenue growth we achieved here portrays a positive trend towards technological advancement in the region,” says Brian NeSmith, president and CEO of Blue Coat. The company currently claims 5% of its global revenues (around US$3.75 million) from the Middle East and North Africa market.

"We want to double our regional sales by next year and expand our enterprise customer portfolio from the ISP market," says Tom Ayers, senior VP global sales, Blue Coat.

The company also announced the availability of two of its latest products, the Proxy SG 8000 and the Proxy AV in the Middle East. The Proxy SG 8000 Series is a purpose-built internet proxy with 2X3.2 Ghz P4 processors providing flexible control with wire-speed performance. The HTTP Proxy appliance provides plug-and-play features for caching, proxy, antivirus internet, instant messaging (IM) and e-mail filtering services. Prices of its proxy line range from US$3,000 to US$90,000 based on user requirements and volume of traffic handled.

“We are seeing a tremendous pick up in business, where 80% of our growth is attributed to enterprise adoption and 20% to ISPs. This growth is in large part due to our regional resellers and partners who have done a great job in getting our products and services out to market,” says Ray Kafity, general manager, Blue Coat Middle East.

Blue Coat essentially provides high-end servers with content filtering software, which enable employee internet management (EIM) services. The company partners with content security software vendors such as Websense, Symantec, Trend Micro, Surf Control, Finjan and Real Networks.

In the region, Blue Coat operates through more than 22 value added resellers (VAR) and 50 resellers and has shipped more than 18,000 of its HTTP security appliances worldwide.
