Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) revealed that a significant number of food establishments in Abu Dhabi were issued warnings for minor violations during the first quarter of 2023.
The authority released these updates on World Food Safety Day, which took place on June 7.
According to ADAFSA, a total of 33,643 inspection visits were conducted across various food and agricultural establishments, including both plant and animal facilities, in the emirate of Abu Dhabi during the first quarter.
Out of these visits, approximately 20,001 were carried out in Abu Dhabi, 9,378 in Al Ain, and roughly 4,269 in the Al Dhafra region.
The purpose of these routine inspections is to monitor and rectify any malpractices by implementing approved procedures.
The inspections also involve follow-up visits to ensure compliance and address any administrative orders or closures.
During the first four months of the year, it was found that 46 percent of the establishments visited fully complied with all food safety requirements.
However, 10,987 establishments, accounting for 33 percent of the total, were issued warnings for minor violations.
A small proportion of only 2 percent, consisting of 703 establishments, were found to have committed violations that warranted appropriate action from ADAFSA.
In terms of food shipments, approximately 23,866 were examined at the ports of Abu Dhabi during the same period.
Out of these, 23,860 shipments were approved for release, while only six were rejected.
Enhancing food safety in Abu Dhabi
ADAFSA recognises the paramount importance of food safety in serving the community. The authority is dedicated to implementing best practices throughout the food chain and adopting effective control systems and comprehensive awareness programs.
These initiatives adhere to international standards and principles of risk analysis, ensuring access to safe food and enhancing community welfare and safety.
To achieve collective responsibility for food safety and prevent foodborne diseases, ADAFSA actively engages with all stakeholders.
It plays a vital role in verifying the safety of food consignments, as well as the production and agricultural inputs received through border crossings.
ADAFSA also works closely with global food safety authorities such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) to uphold the highest global standards in food safety and protect human, animal, and plant health.
ADAFSA encourages all segments of society to contribute actively to the enhancement of the food safety system.
The authority urges the public to report any violations or non-compliance they come across in food establishments by calling the toll-free number for Abu Dhabi Government, 800 555.
