The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the UAE’s largest mosque situated in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, emerged as a prominent global destination, welcoming over 67 million visitors in the last 16 years.

The Mosque, which is currently celebrating its 16th anniversary, has solidified its position as a hub for promoting tolerance, coexistence, and the rich cultural, Islamic, Arab, and local heritage, witnessing historic meetings such as Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, with the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, and hosting a dialogue session attended by the UK’s King Charles and revered scholars and religious figures from various faiths.

Dr. Youssef Al Obaidli, Director-General of the Centre, said over the years, the grand structure has transformed into a Centre for learning and discovery and a national and religious landmark that captivates tourists with its awe-inspiring Islamic architecture.

“It attracts millions of people from diverse cultures who seek to understand its civilisational message and appreciate the beauty of its Islamic architecture,” Al-Tayeb said.

As part of its 16th anniversary, the Centre has launched several initiatives, visual series, and services, including more than 200 recorded episodes of 11 cultural series promoting noble values in society, further solidifying its position as a leading cultural platform.

The Centre also launched the “Sura”, evening cultural tours in the vicinity of the Mosque. These tours are available to visitors throughout the night, allowing the Mosque to be accessible 24 hours a day.

An Incubator for Tolerance

It played a significant role in the first ministerial meeting in Washington, which aimed to promote religious freedom.

Additionally, the Mosque’s involvement in Astana’s sixth Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions further solidified its commitment to global cooperation and understanding.

To expand its reach and foster connections with people worldwide, the Mosque has showcased its models and publications across the globe, aiming to bridge cultural gaps and elevate the UAE’s global reputation.
