King Charles III, the new British monarch, called the death of Queen Elizabeth II, his mother, “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” shortly after her passing on Thursday night.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday at the age of 96 at her residence in Balmoral, Scotland after a reign of over 70 years.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” King Charles III added in the statement.

The Queen had been under medical supervision at Balmoral after pulling out of a virtual Privy Council meeting on Wednesday, with doctors advising her to rest.

At the time of her passing, Queen Elizabeth II was the second-longest reigning monarch in history, having served 70 years and 214 days as the UK’s head of state.
