Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais refinery expansion will be fully commissioned by the end of 2014, the chief executive of Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co (Takreer) said on Monday.

“Commissioning has started and will be completed by the end of this year,” Jasem Ali al-Sayegh told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

The expansion is planned to more than double the capacity of Ruwais refinery from 415,000 barrels a day (bpd). It will process Abu Dhabi’s Murban crude oil grade.

The UAE, a member of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, had planned to complete the expansion in the first quarter of this year.

“You have to appreciate that this is a mega project and it is a long process,” Sayegh said.
