Notebook sales up

The Chinese market for notebooks is witnessing a healthy growth spurt, according to notebook vendors in the country.

Citing statistics compiled by market research firms IDC and Gartner, notebook makers said sales of notebooks in China are predicted to reach between 5.5 and 6 million units in 2006, up from between 3.8 and 3.9 million units in 2005.

Market leader Lenovo recorded quarterly sales of more than 350,000 notebooks during the first half of 2006, while Acer and Asustek both registered sales above the 100,000 mark.

The top five leading vendors in China – Lenovo, Dell, HP, Asustek Computer and Acer – sold on average 100,000 notebooks in China per quarter. Meanwhile, the vendors in sixth to tenth position sold on average 35,000 to 80,000 units every quarter.
