Qatar Airways has ordered five A330-200 freighter aircraft from Airbus, the airline announced at Dubai Airshow on Sunday.
The deal also has an option to buy eight more, which Qatar CEO Bakar Al Akbar said was likely to be taken up soon, taking the total contract value to $2.4bn.
“(Airbus CEO and president) Fabrice Bregier knows that when Qatar Airways take options it’s always confirmed very soon after that order,” Al Akbar said.
The first two planes will be delivered next year, with the next three “soon after”.
Al Akbar said the A330-200 would become the backbone of the airline’s freighter operations, saying the airline was an “excellent choice” for international freight services due to its position on the east-west axis.
The Gulf carrier earlier announced an order for 50 Boeing 777X jets.
