Egypt’s Suez Canal has recorded its highest daily traffic rate in its history on Saturday, it said in a statement.
The international waterway, where around 12 percent of global trade passes through, saw 89 ships carrying 5.2 million tonnes in both directions on that day, its authority chair Osama Rabie said.
Forty-four ships were from the north, while 45 ship crossed from the south, he said.
Suez Canal earlier said it has recorded a $704 million revenue in July, which was it highest ever monthly revenue. The figure represents a 32.4 percent increase from the same month last year, when the canal only recorded $531.8 million.
Around 2,103 ships crossed the Suez Canal that month, an increase of 433 ships from the same period last year. Some 125.1 million tons of cargo were shipped through the canal as well, or an 18.2 percent increase from July 2021.
The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It is one of Egypt’s main sources of foreign currency.
