Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr slumped to a draw and handed the Saudi Pro League title to Al Ittihad on Saturday.
Al Nassr needed a victory and for Al Ittihad to drop points to keep slim title chances alive, but it wasn’t to be.
Al Ittihad clinched the title with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Al Fehia, while hopefuls Al Nassr were only able to manage a draw.
Cristiano Ronaldo trophyless in Saudi Arabia
The results leave Al Ittihad five points clear at the top of the league table, with just one game left to play.
It means they are guaranteed to take the trophy and have more chance of silverware when they face ES Tunis in the Arab Club Championship Cup.
For Al Nassr, the season will end in disappointment. The Riyadh-based club were top of the table when the former Manchester United star joined the club on a contract reported to be worth more than $200m a year.
In 21 games since signing for Al Nassr he has scored a respectable 14 goals and registered two assists, but has been unable to inspire a debut trophy.
After they were knocked out of the King’s Cup and Saudi Cup with the former Real Madrid forward goalless in semi-finals of both competitions, the league title was Al Nassr’s final chance of a trophy in Ronaldo’s first season in Saudi Arabia.
