A change of procurement processes in the UAE construction industry could cause less confrontation between contractors and their clients, according to experts at an industry forum last month.
Speaking at the Major Project Developments in Dubai 2007 conference, organised by MEED conferences, construction company CSHK Dubai Contracting general manager Melvyn Ford said that hotel groups were often bought into the design process quite early to contribute to end-user requirements.
“I feel that the procurement method needs to be changed in the UAE and the contractor brought on board from the beginning of a project, based on a ‘partnering’ type contract in which mutual goals can be identified, [and] risk allocated appropriately,” Ford said. “[This] should result in a smoother, non-confrontational relationship to achieve cost and time targets.
A contractor can contribute to ensure that the design is optimised against costs, which is essential to a successful project.”
