Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. With 12 months and either 354 or 355 days in the Islamic year the corresponding date is slightly different each year.
The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root word “ramidha,” which means “scorching heat” or “dryness.”
Muslims are required to fast from dawn until sunset each day. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called iftar, which typically includes dates and other traditional foods.
