Government employees have been banned from sending and receiving private emails at work, including use of independent email providers such as Hotmail, Yahoo! and Gmail, in new regulations announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai.
The regulation specifically refers to religious and political communication as well as messages relating to charitable causes.
Workers also are not allowed to open unsolicited mail, spam or emails that contain viruses.
They also must not alter the date, time, source of destination information on an email.
The new regulations, published in the government’s Official Gazette, also outline rules related to government employees accessing work emails on their mobile phones, including that the phone be set to automatically lock and require a password.
Other regulations relating to the use of the internet also are reiterated in the legislation.
