Dubai’s Emirates has successfully conducted a demonstration flight using 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on an Airbus A380.

The test flight, which took place in partnership with several industry leaders, marks a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s journey towards reducing carbon emissions and achieving a more sustainable future.

The demonstration flight, powered by Neste’s SAF, showcased the compatibility and flawless performance of renewable fuel in today’s commercial airline engines.

The achievement highlights the potential for widespread adoption of SAF and the crucial role it plays in decarbonising air travel.

“We applaud Emirates for its efforts to help pave the way forward,” said Jonathan Wood, Vice President of Commercial Management and Business Development at Neste.

“Test flights like this are an important step towards 100 percent SAF certification, enabling us to fully leverage the decarbonisation potential of sustainable aviation fuel.”

Emirates Airlines has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable aviation practices. Earlier this year, the airline successfully completed the first 100 percent SAF-powered demonstration flight in the region on a Boeing 777-300ER.

Last month, Emirates flights operating with SAF supplied by Shell Aviation took off from Dubai International Airport, further emphasising the company’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Emirates has also expanded its partnership with Neste, securing the supply of over 3 million gallons of blended SAF for flights departing from Amsterdam Schiphol and Singapore Changi airports in 2024 and 2025.

“All GE Aerospace and Engine Alliance engines can operate on approved SAF blends today. Through extensive research and testing, GE Aerospace is helping lead the approval and adoption of 100 percent SAF in the aviation industry,” Aziz Koleilat, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Turkey at GE Aerospace said.

Emirates leads in sustainable aviation

The successful demonstration flight aligns with Emirates’ commitment to collaborating with strategic partners and industry experts to for a more sustainable future.

The airline actively participates in industry working groups and engages stakeholders to scale the production and supply of SAF.

Emirates has also contributed to the development of the UAE’s power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels roadmap, demonstrating its dedication to supporting the country’s efforts in the aviation sector.

Emirates Airlines’ continuous efforts to integrate sustainable aviation practices into its operations exemplify its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and powering a more fuel-efficient airline industry.

As the airline seeks opportunities to use SAF at various airports, the successful demonstration flight on an Airbus A380 sets a benchmark for future standards in sustainable aviation fuel certification.
