Saudi Arabia issues RFP for New Abha International Airport expansion project

Project will be completed in 2 or 3 phases; Four pre-qualified bidders in the fray; Capacity to reach 13 million by 2054

Abha International Airport, in the Aseer region, is the fifth-largest airport in Saudi Arabia by passenger traffic.

The Saudi Civil Aviation Holding Company (Matarat) has issued the requests for proposal (RFP) to the pre-qualified bidders for the privatisation, expansion, and improvement of the New Abha International Airport in the Kingdom.

Matarat said the winning bidder will be implementing the Abha Airport expansion project in two to three phases and the entire work will be completed by 2028.

Abha International Airport, in the Aseer region, is the fifth-largest airport in Saudi by passenger traffic. It currently has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers, but the ultimate aim is to reach 13 million by 2054.

The pre-qualified bidders are:

GMR Airports Limited: The Indian company responsible for the construction and operations of modern airports in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Goa

Mada TAV: Consortium of Turkish group MADA Holding International and TAV Havalimanlari Holding

Vision Asyada daa: Consortium of Vision International Investment and Asyad Holding and daa International Limited

Touwaik Alliance: Consortium of Skilled Engineers Contracting, Limak Insaat Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS, Incheon International Airport Corporation, Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners) and Obermeyer Middle East GmbH

The international companies have bid to undertake the terminal development under a public-private partnership and will be responsible for the airport development and operation for 30 years.

The expansion will increase the terminal space from its existing 10,500 square metre to 69,400 square metre in the first phase and to 73,200 square metre in the second phase. The new terminal will feature 20 gates.

The design of the new terminal will reflect Aseer area’s architectural heritage and draws inspiration from the Rijal Almaa village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
